The Blue Spiral of Light. It's not a new form of the Aurora Borealis (aka The Northern Lights) that has Norway trying to figure out just what int he hell is going on here.
And on top of that, a bean of light shot 'out of' the center of light to the ground. Looking at the attached pictures to this article, one would naturally think that it might be some sort of laser light show.
The article states that the blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain near the city of Tromso, in the northern part of Norway. The light stopped in mid-air, then began to move around in circles. Seconds later, a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. From the center of which, a green-blue beam of light shot out from the center of the spiral that lasted for ten to twelve minutes before the light show ended.
Tromso air traffic control stated that the light show lasted far too long to be an astronomical phenomenon.
Norwegian defense spokesman Jon Espen Lien thought the lights were from a Russian missile test. He claimed that the Russians frequently use the White Sea and the Barents Sea for missile tests.
Tromso Geophysical Observatory researcher Truls Lynne Hansen agreed with Mr. Lien saying that the missile had veered out of control and was remote detonation. And that the Spiral was just light reflecting on the leaking fuel.
But the Russians claimed that they had not been conducting missile tests in that area.
UPDATE: December 10, 2009: From Closing Velocity (see link below). Most likely this is indeed a failed Russian ballistic missile test. Quote: MOSCOW — Russia's error-prone Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile has suffered its eight failure in 12 tests, the Defense Ministry said Thursday, dealing another blow to Kremlin hopes that the sea-based weapon would become a cornerstone of its nuclear arsenal.
Officials had hoped military contracts for the submarine-launched missile could be negotiated next year, but the high-profile botches look likely to derail those plans. The Bulava is Russia's answer to the American Space Defense program.

Please note when the 'beam' shot out of the spiral. It doesn't 'ring' right with me as just a simple missile test. Its just something else I think. But the failed missile test will be the official cover story for this event - of that I am sure of.
